Electoral reform is something Canadians talk of, but it doesn’t become a reality. Believe it or not, the first time a politician spoke of it is in 1921. It’s been hundred years and has not been adopted. Our current prime minister spoke of bringing it for the election in 2019. That didn’t materialize like all the other times. We need electoral reform badly in Canada because of bad governance. Most of the countries in organisation for economic co-operation and development(OECD) have proportional representation. Those countries have better governance, than ones with first past the post voting system.
There need to be citizens assembly on proportional representation federally. Which could lead to conversation about poverty reduction through universal basic income, universal pharma care and universal child care. These must be adopted. Alternative therapies proven by science must also be adopted and paid for by the federal government. Basic needs such as food, clothing and housing must be adopted as a basic human right, which is enshrined in our constitution. Education must be funded by the federal government at all levels. This is all possible by taxing corporations for their fair share. There was an article on the Toronto Star while back that stated there is 104 billion dollars deficit because of corporate tax rate reduction from the 1960’s to now. Its all possible when it’s fixed. We are doomed if this is not done. Climate change and our diet, our environment and our lifestyle are killing us. On the climate change front, governments must act on the emergency in an urgent manner to preserve biodiversity loss. Renewable energy must be given priority, not nuclear. There must be tree planting programs to capture carbon from the atmosphere. Small scale regenerative agriculture must be promoted by the government. Rather than destructive big agriculture (Big Ag) we have. Big Ag is definitely not a solution because it has proven that, time and time again. There must be indigenous and affected peoples solidarity when dealing with such issues. I’m sure where this is going. So there is more to be added to the list. Basic needs are important!
